What the Village handles
Plainfield's Forestry Division looks after more than 24,000 trees on a seven-year trim cycle, about 3,500 a year, and removes public trees when they become a hazard (Plainfield Forestry). The Village is a long-time Tree City USA (same page).
Storm history
The NWS logged large trees and power lines down in Plainfield in the Aug. 10, 2020 derecho (NWS storm data). On Aug. 11, 2026, storms brought trees and power lines down along Route 126 just west of Meadow Lane and dropped a branch at Illinois and Oak streets downtown (Herald-News).
Permits
We couldn't confirm whether Plainfield needs a permit to remove a private tree. Tree rules appear in the Village code's "Trees and Shrubs" article. Check with the Village before a large removal.
Where Plainfield ash went
Patch's Plainfield edition reported in 2013 that the City of Joliet would remove all parkway ash in the Grand Prairie subdivision off Hennepin Drive (Patch). Parts of the Plainfield area are inside Joliet city limits. If you're in a Joliet-annexed part of Plainfield, parkway questions go to Joliet (815-724-3650), not the Village.
